The Day After

Congratulations on a really great performance yesterday. It was a joy to hear you, from the nice S-sounds on "For Unto Us" to that awesome crescendo in "And He Shall Purify" to that joyous "Amen" in the Magnificat. Well done!

As we all settle in to the (even busier) pre-Christmas season, I want to thank you all for your dedication and commitment to excellence throughout our rehearsals and the performance. This chorus really developed a sound by the dress rehearsal! And that bodes really well for future projects.

I want to thank those of you who let me know how much this opportunity means to you. Those comments really helped me to remember how much this opportunity means to me. As a professional musician, it's easy to get jaded, but your enthusiasm reminds all of us exactly why we do what we do.

I'd like thank David MacKenzie and the NBSO for making this possible. They take a risk on us making this work, and you all rose to the challenge. (They did, too!)

Also, special thanks goes out to Friends Academy and faculty members Jacqueline Maillet (for opening and closing) and Jim Bean (for lights and more).

An even more special thanks goes out to pianist Terry Wolkowicz for accompanying our rehearsals and for putting up with parallel sixths.

I'd also like to thank all of the participating choirs, from the Mastersingers in Falmouth all the way west to the members of the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus. Above all, I'd like to thank the South Coast Community Chorale and their director Frank Wilhelm. The impact of the SCCC's role in this production can not be underestimated. (Nor can Frank's leadership in the tenor section!)

At our final Sunday rehearsal last week, I found myself so pleasantly surprised by the quality of the women's sections that I couldn't help but get excited about preparing The Planets this spring. (Click here to see the schedule.) I'll be in touch in the new year to reconfirm your commitment that project. It will be well worth your time!

Finally, I want to remind everyone that none of what we do would be possible without an audience. When was the last time you attended a concert that you didn't participate in? We all have a busy holiday season before us, but try to commit, in the next 12 months, to attending at least one concert of one of the other choruses you sang with yesterday. I always learn something by attending concerts, you will too. Also, don't forget the NBSO. Don't let a year go by before you see that orchestra again! Make an effort to go to at least one of their concerts before next year's Messiah.

I wish you the best for a joyful Christmas and a happy New Year. I'm sure you'll all miss my emails for a while...
